Official evaluation of the course "Information Retrieval, WS 2012/2013"

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Hannah Bast; Tutors: Eugen Sawin, Mirko Brodesser, Jonas Sternisko, Ragavan Natarajan; Number of active participants at the end of the lecture: around 50; Number of evaluation forms returned: 44.

The evaluation was web-based and run via the University's new ILIAS platform, here is the link. It was announced to the participants of the course in the second to last lecture. Students were explicitly encouraged to submit the form. There was an additional incentive of 20 points that would replace the points of the weakest exercise sheet (20 points per sheet, 13 sheets in total). Submission was anonymous.

In the following, the complete list of all comments given in the free-text fields of the evaluation are given. The comments were copied verbatim, except for a few corrections (wrt orthography, grammar, etc. ... no change of meaning). The feedback from the evaluation forms was also summarized and discussed (over a period of about twenty minutes) at the beginning of the last lecture (slides, video recording).

Prof. Bast is a very talented lecturer that is able to visualize and explain very well and motivate the audience more than every other lecturer I ever listened too. She also answers very fast when there are questions online and takes comments very serious. (Her tutors are also very helpful.)

Normally, in other courses, the students learn some content throughout the semester only to forget everything at the beginning of the next semester.

But in this lecture, the practical exercises help the students understand the course content much better and also gives them a sense of satisfaction. Moreover, since the content of the course is also not outdated, the students gain a lot from this course which prepares them and makes them competitive for their career in this field. Die Erklärungen sind top, Rhetorik angemessen und verständlich. Die Dozentin geht auf Probleme und Fragen immer ein und versucht stehts Verständnisprobleme zu beheben. Wiederholungen komplexer Inhalte sind die Regel. Die Kreativität und neue Ideen der der Studierenden werden gefördert und Wünsche zu Änderungen berücksichtigt, sofern diese eine Verbesserung des Lernklimas und des Verständnisses zur Folge haben. In den Übungen werden praxisnahe Fertigkeiten gefördert und gängige Code-Managementsysteme verwendet um den Studierenden eine gute Basis für professionelle Anwendungsentwicklung zu geben. Die Lehrmaterialien und Betreuung der Studierenden sind vorbildlich und konkurrenzlos an der Technischen Fakultät. Das Klima ist sehr gut und motivierend. sehr motiviert Fr. Bast macht wie immer eine sehr gute VL, ist motiviert (im Gegensatz zu manch anderen Dozenten) und kann den Stoff sehr gut vermitteln ohne sich in irgendwelche komplexen Beweise zu verheddern die eh kein Student mehr anschauen wird da nicht klausurrelevant. Beste Vorlesung, in meiner Hochschullaufbahn. Exzellent vorgetragen, sehr informativ und gibt einen breiten, aber auch tiefen Einblick in die vielfältigsten Bereiche. Vielen Dank für die Vorlesung! I strongly recommend her for award. Good course, good exercises and feedback, good recordings, just overall a very good job! Beste Vorlesung, die ich in meinen 5 Semestern gehoert habe.

Theoretische Konzepte werden auf Basis von kleinen Programmieraufgaben so gut erklaert, dass sie schnell klar werden.

Man lernt in dieser Vorlesung mehr fuer den spaeteren Beruf (ausgenommen man will an der Uni bleiben), als in den anderen Vorlesungen zusammengenommen. Viele aktuelle Technologien wurden vorgestellt und die Einfachheit dieser dargelegt.

In dieser Vorlesung hatte ich sehr viel Spass, sowohl die VL zu besuchen, als auch die Uebungsblaetter zu loesen. In 99% der anderen Vorlesungen liesst der Dozent einfach seine 5 Jahre alten Folien vor: hier wird genaustens auf die Studenten eingegangen.

Hinzu kommt noch, dass ich einen echt Klasse Tutor hatte. Gerade weil mein Interesse an dem Thema vorher nicht übermäßig groß war ist es eine umso größere Leistung dass ich letzten Endes viel gelernt habe und sogar Spaß hatte. Sehr gut war auch dass die Vorlesungen als Video online verfügbar waren, sonst hätte ich den Kurs gar nicht belegen können. Hervorzuheben ist auch dass Fragen im Forum immer schnell beantwortet wurden.

Des weiteren hat mein Tutor (Eugen) definitiv einen C++-Ninja Award verdient. Sehr motivierend, immer freundlich und witzig. Gute und verständliche englische Aussprache. Geht sofort in der Vorlesung auf die Vorschläge der Studierenden ein. Evaluiert jede einzelne Vorlesung und bespricht die Evaluationen in der darauf folgenden Vorlesung. Prof. Hannah Bast schafft es teils recht komplexe Themen derart leicht darzustellen und zu motivieren, dass es richtig spaß macht der Vorlesung zu folgen. Ich bin mir sicher, dass das gleiche Thema bei den meisten anderen Profs nicht so spannend wäre. Zudem hat man immer das Gefühl, dass die Proffessorin (auch praktische) Ahnung auf ihrem Gebiet hat und kann so begründen Prof. gives very much importance for implementing concept practically. Her expertise in mathematics, Algorithms and other topics helps student to get more knowledge. Die Dozentin ist immer sehr motiviert, engagiert und hilfsbereit. Kein anderer Dozent gibt sich so viel Mühe mit den Veranstaltungen, wie sie. Dozentin geht stark auf Feedback zu Vorlesungen ein um Lernerlebnis für Studierende zu verbessern Erklärungen sehr verständlich Durch aktives Forum sowie Wiki zum Vergleichen der Ergebnisse wird Interaktion zwischen Studierenden gefördert She is the best ever. - nobody else puts any comparable effort into their lectures - the subject is creative and useful - many topics around coding and other useful things are covered 'on the fly' I think this is one of the best teachers i have ever had. But she makes exercises that took too much time (that's the unique complain) - I think the professor is one of the best at the faculty. - She really cares about the students and the teaching! First, the methodology of Prof. Bast is having good results in my process of learning. I have also improved a lot my programming skills.

This lecture provides a unique overview of topics coming from several areas, from Machine Learning, to Databases. Because theory cannot be completely understood if all details are not clear, this lecture is the perfect combination of both worlds.
