Official evaluation of the course "Information Retrieval, WS 2018/2019"
Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Hannah Bast; Assistant: Claudius Korzen; Tutors: Patrick Brosi, Niklas Schnelle, Daniel Bindemann. Number of participants in the evaluation: 46. Number of registrations for the exam: TODO (TODO for the written exam + TODO for the oral exam). Ratio of these two numbers: TODO.
The evaluation was web-based and run via the University's central evaluation system EvaSys. A mail with a personalized link to the online evaluation form was sent by the system on TODO. A reminder was sent on TODO. The evaluation was closed on the evening of TODO. In total, TODO students reported that they didn't received neither the first mail nor the reminder mail from the EvaSys system, although all of them were registered for the course in HisInOne. rsonalized link. Participation was anonymous.
The evaluation was also announced to the participants of the course in Lecture 11, slide 6. Participation was also asked for as part of Exercise Sheet 11. 20 points were awarded, which were announced to be used to replace the points of the worst exercise sheet (there were 13 exercise sheets overall, for each of which a maximum of 20 points could be achieved). As usual, 50% out of the maximum number of points from the exercise sheets (that is, 130 out of 260 points) were required to be admitted to the exam. Participation in the evaluation was TODO% this year (number of submitted evaluation forms / number of exam registrations). In previous years, where also 50% of the points from the exercise sheets was required for exam admission, participation was also over 90%. In the WS 15/16, where everyone was admitted to the exam, regardless of the number of points achieved in the exercises, the rate of participation in the evaluation was 71%.

Auch wenn die Veranstaltung dieses Jahr nicht live war, war es dennoch besser strukturiert und organisiert als in manch anderen Vorlesungen. Die Inhalte sind meistens gut verständlich und brauchen selten eine externe Quelle, um sie ganz zu verstehen.
Die Dozentin kann sehr gut und anschaulich erklären.
Die Folien sind top. Sehr übersichtlich und sind gleichzeitig auch eine gute Hilfestellung für die Übungen.
Die Vorlesung bildet sowohl in Praxis (Programmieren, worin ich zu wenig Übung habe) als auch in der Theorie (interessante LA) ausgewogen weiter. Wie erwartet war die Vorlesung natürlich sehr unterhaltsam, die Dozentin hat einen großartigen Humor und gestaltet die Vorlesung auf eine Art, die nicht langweilig wird. Sogar das Live-Coding wurde mir nicht langweilig (obwohl ich das z.B. in AlgoDat vor 3 Semestern nicht so spannend fand). Die Übungen waren alle sehr nützlich zum Vertiefen und Verstehen.
Es war die beste Vorlesung, die ich bis jetzt an der Uni Freiburg gesehen habe. Die Mathe wurde nicht einfach so auf die Folien geschrieben, sondern sie wurde mit Beispielen gezeigt, es wurden die Herleitungen erklärt. Es wurde live gecodet, sodass man nachvollziehen konnte woher der Code kommt und was er tut. Man bekommt schon oft genug unerklärten Code vorgelegt und man muss fehlende Teile ergänzen, macht mir weniger Spaß, wie wenn ich weiß was der Code macht.

Frau Bast hat gute Konzepte den Studenten die Lehre praxisnah zu vermitteln. Diese Bemühungen fördern ein besseres Verständnis.
Frau Prof. Hannah Bast gibt sich sehr viel Mühe den Stoff zu vermitteln, sie wendet verschiedene Methoden an und reagiert auf geäußerte Kritik. Frau Prof. Bast versteht es für ein Thema zu begeistern und ist dabei humorvoll, stets am Lernerfolg der Studierenden orientiert und fair in der Beurteilung. Alleine die zur Verfügung gestellten Materialien, die teilweiße (Code) Live in der Vorlesung erstellt werden sorgen für einen fließenden Übergang zu den Übungen. Insgesamt waren bisher die Veranstaltugnen von Frau Prof. Bast die lehrreichsten die ich in meinem bisherigen Studium absolviert habe.
I have not seen before in any of the classes I took, that such an effort is undertaken to provide support to students and make them more enthusiastic for the course. I sometimes showed some parts from her lectures to my friends who are not taking this course.
Passionate about her topic and organizes her lectures so that students understand and are engaged in the topic. Best professor at the Engineering Faculty!
Prof. Bast explains everything very good with a lot of examples and in a best way it could be. The course is very well designed.

Sie schafft es mit Leichtigkeit und Humor, schwierige Inhalte so rüberzubringen, dass sie leicht verständlich sind. Die Übungen lassen einen das neuerworbene Wissen anwenden und sind herausfordernd und immer sehr lehrreich.

The lectures are dynamic, easy to follow and with humour. She starts at the bottom of a topic and shows us how to work in order to get to our goal, instead of just explaining the goal. I think that we in this way learn an efficient and more creative way to think.
