Official evaluation of the course "Information Retrieval, WS 2012/2013"
Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Hannah Bast; Tutors: Eugen Sawin, Mirko Brodesser, Jonas Sternisko, Ragavan Natarajan. Number of participants in the evaluation: 55. Number of active participants at the end of the lecture: 58. Ratio of these two numbers: 95%.
The evaluation was web-based and run via the University's new ILIAS platform, here is the link. It was announced to the participants of the course in the second to last lecture. Students were explicitly encouraged to submit the form. There was an additional incentive of 20 points that would replace the points of the weakest exercise sheet (20 points per sheet, 13 sheets in total). Submission was anonymous.
In the following, the complete list of all comments given in the free-text fields of the evaluation are given. The comments were copied verbatim, except for a few corrections (wrt orthography, grammar, etc. ... no change of meaning). If you see a comment from yourself which you do not want to appear in this list or if you find a comment that you think was inaccurately transcribed, send an (anonymous, if you prefer) mail to Hannah Bast.
The feedback from the evaluation forms was also summarized and discussed (over a period of about twenty minutes) at the beginning of the last lecture (slides, video recording).

Nominations for teaching award (40 out of 55)
Prof. Bast is a very talented lecturer who is able to visualize and explain very well and motivate the audience more than every other lecturer I ever listened too. She also answers very fast when there are questions online and takes comments very serious. Her tutors are also very helpful.

The professor mixes the theoretical stuff with non-trivial practical exercises, which helps the students understand the course in a great detail. Normally, in other courses, the students learn some content throughout the semester only to forget everything at the beginning of the next semester. But in this lecture, the practical exercises help the students understand the course content much better and also gives them a sense of satisfaction. Moreover, since the content of the course is also not outdated, the students gain a lot from this course which prepares them and makes them competitive for their career in this field.
Die Erklärungen sind top, Rhetorik angemessen und verständlich. Die Dozentin geht auf Probleme und Fragen immer ein und versucht stehts Verständnisprobleme zu beheben. Wiederholungen komplexer Inhalte sind die Regel. Die Kreativität und neue Ideen der der Studierenden werden gefördert und Wünsche zu Änderungen berücksichtigt, sofern diese eine Verbesserung des Lernklimas und des Verständnisses zur Folge haben. In den Übungen werden praxisnahe Fertigkeiten gefördert und gängige Code-Managementsysteme verwendet um den Studierenden eine gute Basis für professionelle Anwendungsentwicklung zu geben. Die Lehrmaterialien und Betreuung der Studierenden sind vorbildlich und konkurrenzlos an der Technischen Fakultät. Das Klima ist sehr gut und motivierend.
Sehr motiviert
Fr. Bast macht wie immer eine sehr gute Vorlesung, ist motiviert (im Gegensatz zu manch anderen Dozenten) und kann den Stoff sehr gut vermitteln ohne sich in irgendwelche komplexen Beweise zu verheddern, die eh kein Student mehr anschauen wird da nicht klausurrelevant.
Beste Vorlesung in meiner Hochschullaufbahn. Exzellent vorgetragen, sehr informativ und gibt einen breiten, aber auch tiefen Einblick in die vielfältigsten Bereiche. Vielen Dank für die Vorlesung!

Beste Vorlesung, die ich in meinen 5 Semestern gehört habe.
Theoretische Konzepte werden auf Basis von kleinen Programmieraufgaben so gut erklärt, dass sie schnell klar werden.
Man lernt in dieser Vorlesung mehr fuer den späteren Beruf (ausgenommen man will an der Uni bleiben), als in den anderen Vorlesungen zusammengenommen. Viele aktuelle Technologien wurden vorgestellt und die Einfachheit dieser dargelegt.
In dieser Vorlesung hatte ich sehr viel Spaß, sowohl die VL zu besuchen, als auch die Übungsblaetter zu lösen. In 99% der anderen Vorlesungen liest der Dozent einfach seine 5 Jahre alten Folien vor: hier wird genauestens auf die Studenten eingegangen.
Hinzu kommt noch, dass ich einen echt klasse Tutor hatte.
Gerade weil mein Interesse an dem Thema vorher nicht übermäßig groß war, ist es eine umso größere Leistung dass ich letzten Endes viel gelernt habe und sogar Spaß hatte. Sehr gut war auch, dass die Vorlesungen als Video online verfügbar waren, sonst hätte ich den Kurs gar nicht belegen können. Hervorzuheben ist auch, dass Fragen im Forum immer schnell beantwortet wurden. Des weiteren hat mein Tutor (Eugen) definitiv einen C++-Ninja Award verdient.
Sehr motivierend, immer freundlich und witzig. Gute und verständliche englische Aussprache. Geht sofort in der Vorlesung auf die Vorschläge der Studierenden ein. Evaluiert jede einzelne Vorlesung und bespricht die Evaluationen in der darauf folgenden Vorlesung.
Prof. Hannah Bast schafft es teils recht komplexe Themen derart leicht darzustellen und zu motivieren, dass es richtig spaß macht der Vorlesung zu folgen. Ich bin mir sicher, dass das gleiche Thema bei den meisten anderen Profs nicht so spannend wäre. Zudem hat man immer das Gefühl, dass die Professorin (auch praktische) Ahnung auf ihrem Gebiet hat und kann so begründen.
Prof. gives very much importance for implementing concept practically. Her expertise in mathematics, algorithms and other topics helps student to get more knowledge.
Die Dozentin ist immer sehr motiviert, engagiert und hilfsbereit.
Kein anderer Dozent gibt sich so viel Mühe mit den Veranstaltungen wie sie.

I think this is one of the best teachers I have ever had. But she makes exercises that took too much time (that's the unique complaint).

First, the methodology of Prof. Bast is having good results in my process of learning. I have also improved a lot my programming skills.
This lecture provides a unique overview of topics coming from several areas, from Machine Learning, to Databases. Because theory cannot be completely understood if all details are not clear, this lecture is the perfect combination of both worlds. Sehr engagiert

Beste Vorlesung an der ich jemals teilgenommen habe.
Mit Abstand bestes Angebot an Materialien (Aufzeichnung, Forum, SVN-Server, Jenkins ...). Die Vorlesungen schienen immer gut vorbereitet und der Zusammenhang zu den Übungen war immer intuitiv klar.
Prof. Bast prepared this course with an extraordinary structure. Every subject is well connected and I never felt lost during the middle of the course... I never needed to ask myself "What does this have to do with everything else?" Unfortunately this question is not uncommon in other courses. The lectures given by Prof. Bast were top quality. Really engaged the students in the lecture teachings, I personally never felt bored. It was like watching an engaging movie! Each of the lectures was carefully designed so that every student could understand it and Prof. Bast always tried to make sure everyone understood what she was talking about. The materials of the lecture were perfect. The exercises, videos and slides were present on time and with the exact amount of detail needed to understand this course. The tutors are a great plus in Information Retrieval, and Prof. Bast has an huge influence on this. I have no doubt that Prof. Bast would be a worthy recipient of an University of Freiburg Teaching Award. One of the most memorable teachers I had the pleasure to learn from.
Part of me wonders which committee oversees this award. It would be really funny if Professor Bast had to award herself something.
However, in all seriousness, there are many reasons why this course is exemplary: effective usage of forums/wiki, effective usage of code submission platform, effective usage of lecture recordings, high quality of lectures as a whole, appropriate emphasis on student feedback throughout the course.
The lecturer seems to put in as much work into the exercises as into the lectures and thus creates an effective learning environment. Students feedback directly effects the course.
I was never bored when listening to Prof. Bast. She explains topics very clearly. Furthermore, the way she progressively improves her course by taking feedback after every exercise sheet is completed, is phenomenal. The process to submit an exercise sheet is also very straightforward, ordered and fun.
What do you like about this course
The exercises are perfect to get into a topic and should be kept the way they are. When you had a lecture like that before (routing) they are not too hard.

Die Übungen sind vortrefflich gewählt und führen konsistent zu einem Aha-Effekt. Ich würde mir wünschen, dass alle Professoren solche anwendungsnahen praktischen Aufgaben zu ihren Veranstaltungen anbieten würden.
Das Feedback der Tutoren ist äußerst detailiert, so dass Probleme verstanden und behoben werden können.
Die Musterlösungen, die nach jeder Aufgabe im Netz verfügbar sind helfen besonders, wenn Aufgaben aufeinander aufbauen und bei der jeweils vorhergehenden Aufgabe große Probleme nicht behoben werden konnten. Mit den Musterlösungen hat man eine gute verlässliche Basis, um trotzdem effizient weiter arbeiten zu können.
Die Vorlesungsaufzeichnungen sind die besten der Fakultät! Genauso beibehalten (der Extra-HiWi lohnt sich).
Auch die anwendungsnahen Code-Management- und Wissensmanagement-Systeme wie Daphne, SVN und Forum sind perfekt für die Übungsaufgaben und erleichtern Entwicklungsprozesse; das Forum ist eine sehr gute Möglichkeit FAQs zu den Übungen zu klären. Absolut empfehlenswert!

Die Verbindung zwischen Vorlesung und Übungen ist sehr gut. Unglaublich gute Erklärungen mit "aaahh!"-Effekt, großes Lob!
The course covers very well both theory and practical stuff. I believe everybody will fully understand the content by doing the exercise.
Very pleasant lecture, clear voice and very structured. Prof Bast payed a lot attention into showing us details which are important for implementation which a lot of profs would just forget or not think about. Live coding was very impressive and nice to get an idea how it works. The recordings are prefect, especially with the cutted in cam picture of the Prof, which gives feeling like sitting in the lecture again. Also it was funny, what also should not come too short!
My tutor did give me a perfectly clear and helpful feedback. The feedback was very detailed, also he answered my questions very preceise. Never had a lecture before with such an detailed code feedback. Awesome!
And another important thing to add: we got cookies, that was a very nice gesture as well

Excellent lecture recordings. Better than any other video lectures I've seen.
The exercise infrastructure (w/ build system etc) makes for a very transparent submission process.
Angewandte Vorlesung erleichtert den sonst sehr theoretischen Unialltag immens!

Die Algorithmen wurden sehr gut erklärt. Fast noch wichtiger: Es war immer die Motivation klar warum es interessant ist sich mit dem jeweiligen Thema zu beschäftigen. Sehr motivierend war auch dass für die Übungen "echte Daten" (wikipedia usw.) zur Verfügung standen. Zu guter Letzt hat mein Tutor immer sehr ausführliches Feedback zu meinem Code gegeben, so dass sich meine C++ Kenntnisse verbessert haben.
Die Zeichnungen und in der Vorlesung live vorgerechneten Beispiele auf keinen Fall durch vorgefertigte Folien ersetzen. So wird der Stoff genau in der richtigen Geschwindigkeit vorgetragen.
Die Aufzeichnungen sind super zum Vorbereiten auf die Klausur, oder falls man doch mal fehlt.
Das Feedback der Tutoren ist superausführlich und hilft wirklich viel weiter.
Die Übungen bauen nicht immer aufeinander auf. Ein echter Vorteil zu Efficient Route Planning.

Die große Anzahl unterschiedlicher Themen. Jedes Thema wurde durch eine sinnvolle praktische Übung vertieft.
Besonders gut gefallen hat mir, dass auf Kritik bereits während der Veranstaltung eingegangen wurde und so versucht wurde die Vorlesung besser zu gestalten.
So wurde z.B. die Seitenzahl auf den Folien verschoben, damit diese in den Aufzeichnungne besser lesbar sind.
Ich finde es sehr(!) gut, dass Farben verwendet werden, um bei Skizzen und Graphiken Elemente hervorzuheben und zu verdeutlichen. Das erleichtert das Verständnis teils enorm.
Till K-means topic I really liked the course but after that courses are little bit difficult to understand for me. I got chance to learn variety of Programming techniques and tools in this course. Especially I liked problem that we have solved in Octave (matrix operations). I really liked about Prof giving information about all the problems that we can face while working with tools (Shortcuts for tools, important observations, some useful commands in slides). I liked the way explaining a concept with programming in class.

Das war die erste Vorlesung in englischer Sprache, der ich auch folgen konnte.
Die Dozentin war immer sehr engagiert und hilfsbereit.
In der Vorlesung herrschte eine gute Stimmung.

Die Musterlösungen für die Aufgaben wurden veröffentlicht.

There are many practical and interesting exercises to learn the theory practicing. The teacher's explanations and coding style is simply amazing (one of the best teachers I ever had).

I thought in nearly every lecture: cool, that's a very interesting topic and I really want to learn how it works. In other lectures this is often not the case.
The Cookies
The methodology of Professor's Bast is great. One learns a lot by implementing the algorithms shown during the lecture. The live programming is also great.

Super! Lockerer Stil, endlich technisch orientierter Unterricht. Die Theorie im Informatikstudium scheint mir oft wie ziellose Paragraphenreiterei. Nicht in dieser Vorlesung. Und Details wurden so weggelassen, dass man selber sehen konnte, wo man vertiefen möchte.
Sehr praxis-orientiert. Verständnis für Algorithmen wächst, wenn man sich selbst daran versucht!

The video quality is perfect and they are available so fast that it's tempting to stay at home and watch them.

Wenn es mal gar nicht geht oder ich etwas wieder Vergessen habe beim Bearbeiten des Übungsblattes bieten die fantastischen Aufzeichnungen eine super Alternative.

Ich finde die persönliche Anwesenheit direkter und man ist nicht abgelenkt von anderen Dingen, wie es etwa bei den Aufzeichnungen der Fall sein kann.
Fragen und Probleme können besser angegangen werden.
Dennoch sind die hervorragenden Aufzeichnungen wichtiger Bestandteil der Nachbereitung und äußerst hilfreich für die Übungen.

Ohne die Möglichkeit die Vorlesung als Video anzusehen hätte ich sie vermutlich gar nicht belegt da ich zum selben Termin noch eine andere Veranstaltung habe.
Ich nehme das Angebot der Aufzeichungen oft wahr, da es hin und wieder passiert, dass ich zur Vorlesungszeit aufgrund Tutor-Tätigkeiten nicht anwesend sein kann. Die Aufzeichunungen schaue ich mir meistens, unabhängig davon, ob ich persönlich da war, nochmal direkt vor dem Übungsblatt an.
I tried maximum to attend courses in class. Some times I think 1 or 2 times missed to attend class and followed recordings. I think it is always better to attend class rather recordings. In case of any doubts it will answered right away.

Even if I attended the lecture I would often still watch parts of the recording if things were unclear or I didn't pay enough attention.

Unfortunately, I have another lecture which is clashing with this one, so I was forced to do like this. Both lectures are recorded, but the quality of the recordings of Information Retrieval is much better.
Videos are perfect and the night is cold, so even though I feel like missing the atmosphere of the lecture it's so convenient to watch the videos at home. Also the forum is very helpful, so asking questions is no problem.

Wie eine neue Folge der Lieblings-Fernsehserie, die man sofort sehen will, wenn sie zum ersten Mal im Fernsehen ausgestrahlt wird.
Die Aufzeichnungen sind dank der sehr guten technischen Aufbereitung nahezu gleichwertig zu persönlicher Anwesenheit.
I live 30min away from TF so I just save 1 hour in journeys by seeing the excellent videos of the excellent lectures.
The lectures are quite dense. Better to be fully alert than not to be. I wouldn't change the lectures though!!!
Visiting the lectures gives you a good overview of the topics. But in order to implement them you'll want to rewatch the lecture at home or reread the slides.
What do you not like so much about this course
Aufgaben nehmen meist viel Zeit in Anspruch.
Übungen sind teilweise sehr zeitaufwändig. Wenn das mit anderen Projekten zusammen fällt bleibt in machen Wochen überhaupt keine Zeit die Aufgaben sinnvoll zu bearbeiten.
Dadurch das die Übungen sehr aufeinander aufbauen muss das dann häufig in der folgenden Woche nachgearbeitet werden.
Teils seeehr umfangreiche Zettel...
Changing colors in between the presentation distracts the students attention. The students can understand even if only single color is used. When a topic is being followed, changing the colors in between, in a clumsy application that this university is using, takes some 5-10 seconds, which is enough to distract the attention of a student. Solution: 1. The color palette, the eraser and the different pencil styles should be readily available on top of the application (in a linear layout) so that the lecturer should be able to choose them without having to do 10 mouse clicks and lots of navigation ... OR ... 2. No use of colors.
Abgesehen davon, dass diese Veranstaltung das erste Mal stattfindet: die Übungen sind teilweise extrem zeitaufwändig und der Arbeitsaufwand kann öfter zwischen 10 und 15 Stunden liegen. Hier sollten Einschränkungen gemacht werden.
Anfangs war die Punktevergabe der Tutoren ziemlich konservativ. Dies besserte sich im Verlauf der Veranstaltung. Eine klare Linie, welche Abzüge Sinn machen, und wo mehr Toleranz angebracht wäre, sollte zu Begin mit den Tutoren geklärt werden.
Die Unterstützung zur Entwicklung unter Windows ist relativ schwach. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass etwa die Programmierung in C++ unter Linux geschieht (z.B. bereitgestellte Makefiles enthalten nur Linux-Kommandos).
Die Entwicklung per IDEs wird nicht gefördert, obwohl diese hilfreiche Automatismen zur Code-Formatierung und Debugging anbieten, als auch Codevervollständigung, die gerade bei ausladenden Programmieraufgaben äußerst hilfreich wäre. Die Arbeit mit Eclipse sollte gefördert werden.
Alles gut erklärt, nur wird manchmal für wenig wichtige Sachen viel Zeit investiert und für wichtige Sachen, die auch bspw. wichtig sind für die Übungsaufgaben fehlt dann manchmal die Zeit um genau ins Detail zu gehen.
Eveything was good.
The exercises in general needed a lot more time then the estimated 8 hours. Of course this is due to a lack of experience and coding practice, but the estimated 8 hours should match the average skills of the people taking the class or estimated higher. But this is not a real dislike, because I think when the exercises were easier we wouldn't have learned so much. No pain, no gain.
Teilweise fehlerhafte Folien
1. The workload on the exercises is rather high. I think some parts like the reading of the CSV files could be provided because coding this stuff doesn't particulary add to the understanding of the material but might still take 1 hour or more to complete. Another example for this is the web related code like the JQuery/JavaScript code.

Although the exercises were good... I feel that there is no need to force for java/c++ in the exercises... also the coding conventions were just a hindrance ... also git > svn
Insgesamt etwas viele Fehler in der Vorlesung und auf den Übungszetteln (Absicht?). Oft war das einfach nur verwirrend und beim Bearbeiten der Übungsaufgaben ärgerlich.
Manchen Themen, zum Beispiel "Naive Bayes" höre ich in meinem Studium leider nun schon zum gefühlten 100. Mal und habe auch nicht damit gerechnet in dieser Vorlesung schon wieder darauf zu stoßen. Dennoch fand ich den Ausflug in Machine Learning im Kontext von Information Retrieval sinnvoll.
Aufgabe 4 bei den Übungsblättern sollte weniger Punkte geben, als die vorhergehenden Aufgaben. Diese kann nämlich meist nur gelöst werden, wenn die vorherigen Aufgaben (korrekt) bearbeitet wurden. Somit bekommen Leute, die die Aufgaben verstanden haben nochmals Punkte "geschenkt". Leute, die Schwierigkeiten hatten aber das Problem, dass ihnen zusätzlich noch eigentlich leicht erreichbare Punkte fehlen, da diese nur erreicht werden können, wenn die vorherigen Aufgaben komplett sind.
I had really hard time in understanding SVM's . I didn't understand the context where do we use SVM and Naive Bayes in actual search engines. Some courses are really quite boring example in Ontology I think explanation about queries and Indexes could be bit short (we can spend less time on it). I had hard time in understanding some statements in forums (communication). Lot of twisting in way of expressing some statements. At present could not able to give any example. or Could be problem with my English. In exercise sheet you can add appropriate explanation where ever required (sometimes missing).
Die Vorlesungseinheiten folgen keinem Faden; es gibt einfach jede Woche etwas anderes, das man grob mit dem (etwas leeren) Begriff "Information Retrieval" in Verbindung bringen könnte. Z.B. die SPARQL/SQL-Einheit, die man halt doch einfach dem DBIS-Lehrstuhl überlassen sollte nicht dass die es besser könnten, aber was haben wir denn gelernt? Wie eine spezielle kleine SPARQL-/SQL-Anfrage ungefähr aussieht, und dass man Indizes benutzen sollte. Bisschen mager für 90 Minuten, und sowas kann man sich wirklich auch in ein paar Tagen anlesen. Viel besser sind die Aufgaben, in denen man Algorithmen implementieren muss.
Es wurde immer viele Kenntnisse vorausgesetzt (Mathematik, Web Engineering).
Die Übungsblätter waren oft sehr zeitaufwändig und haben oft viel länger als die angegeben 8 Stunden gedauert.
Die Aufgabenstellungen waren oft nur sehr vage formuliert, es gab praktisch keine Beispiele und nur unzureichende Tipps für die Implementierung. Oft konnten die Aufgaben nur verstanden werden, wenn man die Beiträge im Forum durchgelesen hat. Es wäre gut, wenn die Testfälle vorgegeben wären, so könnte man schnell überprüfen, ob eine Funktion funktioniert. Oft wurde in der Vorlesung nur abstrakt erklärt, wie eine Berechnung funktioniert, in der Übung war es dann nicht immer einfach diese dann umzusetzen. Die mathematischen Ausführungen sollten viel ausführlicher auf den Folien erklärt werden.
Evtl. ein großes Projekt (Suchmaschine), was in den Übungen durch ganze Vorlesung aufgebaut wird. Dadurch wäre roter Faden vielleicht leichter erkennbar und evtl. würden auch kleinere Dinge wie Performanceverbesserung beim Listenschneiden, Behandlung von UTF-8-Fehlern etc. länger in Erinnerung bleiben.
Man könnte ja nach jeder Übung für die Leute die es nicht geschafft haben eine Musterlösung zur Verfügung stellen. Anmerkung: es stand immer eine Musterlösung zur Verfügung, siehe Wiki.
Eventuell noch etwas zum aktuellem Stand/ aktuelle Herausforderungen bei der Information Retrieval Forschung, speziell im Bereich semantische Suche.
Too many mathematics (Proves and theorems). Sometimes they are needed to explain the topic but also they are hard calculations that need a high level of mathematics. For foreing students it will be nice to tell them this before starting the lecture. I know that in german mathematics level is higher than in other countries so it will be nice to tell it before. If in the exam are not required i look fine at it is.
Too many work. As i said before there are very interesting exercises but most of the times they took a lot of time.
Sometimes there was a little to much proofs and mathematic. Especially when we only importent thing we need was the outcome of the proofs. The exercise were really time-consuming. Sometimes this depends on programming skills as Prof. Bast said. But these exercises, in comparison with those from ERP, were not always perfectly clear. For the last 4 exercises approx., I had in the end the feeling that I did a good job, the tests were working, but still the results were different than those expected.
In my case, I had problems with the understanding of those parts regarding linear algebra, SVM, entropy and this kind of things. Although, I've seen these topics already, I couldn't catch the main ideas. It would have been a good idea to have a recap of the basics.
The feedback of the tutor are good but not complete. He focused more on efficiency issues, the data structures that one should use and so on. This was helpful at the beginning, but in the end no real feedback about the logic was provided. This is also reasonable, because of the time needed.
Some of the imprecision were due to the fact, that this is the first time the lecture was offered, I understand (for example the data provided for the exercises).
Also, in my opinion, Prof. Bast should not change her style, because some students don't like it. I personally liked how she was using the colors. She changed it, because some students said it was too annoying to have too many colors. I don't see how this can be true. There are too many exercises per week, and usually take more than 10 hours per week doing them.
For the next time, I recommend you to write as a prerequisite the knowledge of mathematics that the students should know to go to this course. Because it was not written anywhere, and it is so hard if you are not well prepared to do this course.

Übungsaufgaben sind extrem Zeitaufwendig, sie vermitteln zwar gut den Lehrstoff. Aber sie könnten teilweise ein klein wenig zeitaufwändiger sein.
Fällt mir spontant nichts ein.
Zu zeitaufwändig für Studenten mit weniger Programmiererfahrung der niederen Semester (insbesondere Lehramt...)
Für Bachelor Studenten vielleicht ein bisschen schwierig? - Aber interessant!
Master Studenten haben es vielleicht ein bisschen leichter?
Sometimes the exercises are not really clear. Of course there is the forum for clarification, but it would be nicer if this would not be necessary.
Often the exercises took quite long and it was not so clear what to do (maybe when this course will be held a second time these problems won't occur so often). Many exercises depended on the previous exercise. However the correction & feedback of the tutor was usually available only one day before the next exercise was due. So when doing the exercise I never knew if I extended a wrong solution from the last exercise or not and I often had to rework my submission again after the feedback was available. It would be good if the correction took only half a week so the student has enough time to adjust the new submission.
Wie in Efficient Route Planning: Folien werden teilweise kurz vor der Vorlesung noch geändert. (Betrifft nicht Ergebnisse, sondern Inhalt der Vorlesung). Leider ist der rote Faden ab der Mitte der Vorlesung nicht mehr wirklich ersichtbar gewesen. Ich verstehe, dass ich Textdokumente Clustern kann, dass ich sie klassifizieren kann, sehe aber das größere Bild davon noch nicht. Außerdem frage ich mich ob hierfür nicht eine Unterrichtseinheit gereicht hätte, da es ja eine Vorlesung Machine Learning (für K-Means und Naive Bayes) und Statistical Pattern Recognition (für SVMs) gibt. Die Session über die statistische Validität hingegen war sehr interessant. Es wäre jedoch schön gewesen, wenn am Ende alles noch einmal zu einem größeren Bild zusammen geführt worden wäre.
Hatte erwartet, etwas über Semantische Analyse der Texte zu erfahren, also wirklich die Fähigkeit, die gespeicherten Textdokumente zu verstehen. Hier wäre es dann interessant gewesen, ob es möglich ist die für SparQL nötigen Beziehungen aus unstrukturierten Textdokumenten zu lernen.
Meine Meinung: eine Session mit Web/Javascript etc. ist ausreichend.
Bitte ermöglichen Sie doch wieder eine anonymere Lösung für die Evaluation. Ich halte die Lehr-Evaluation für durchaus wichtig und bin auch bereit dafür Zeit zu investieren. Allerdings sollte die Umfrage für eine ehrlich Meinung so weit es geht anonym sein. Ein "vertrauen sie uns doch das es anonym ist" ist da einfach nicht sehr überzeugend.
Teilwese wurden die Themen zu schnell abgehakt, gerade bei Dingen, die für Bachelor-Studenten absolut neu sind sollte immer(!) ein einfaches Beispiel vorgerechnet werden. Meistens war das aber auch der Fall und wenn nicht ging es denke ich aus dem wöchentlichen Feedback hervor.

Sometimes the Exercises took to much of the students time. It was not rare to spend more than 16 hours in an exercise sheet. That is the double of the predicted teacher amount.
I was frustrated when there were mistakes in lecture. To some extent, this is a pedagogical style that may have even made me learn better. So, while I may have disliked it, I still don't think it needn't to be changed.
One thing that was rather frustrating was the way that slide space was used for text. I understand that it is a new system, whose kinks are still being worked out, but I thought that the written materials that appeared on the slides should have been written out ahead of time just to make sure everything fit with adequate space. To be clear, I'm not suggesting that they can't be written in real time on the slides during lecture, just that there be planning to make sure that it's feasible. It should always be possible to consult the slides quickly to recover information. Sometimes, with all of the arrows and small print, that was challenging.
Offer an alternative to the version control system
Accept solutions in languages other than in Java or C++.
