Official evaluation of the course "Information Retrieval, WS 2016/2017"

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Hannah Bast; Assistant: Patrick Brosi; Tutors: Björn Buchhold, Claudius Korzen, Raghu Rajan, Natalie Prange, Johanna Götz, Axel Lehmann. Number of participants in the evaluation: 73. Number of registrations for the exam: 72 (as of 30-01-2017).

The evaluation was web-based and run via the University's central evaluation system EvaSys. A mail with a personalized link to the online evaluation form was sent by the system on Monday, January 16. A reminder was sent on Wednesday, January 25. The evaluation was closed on the evening of Sunday, January 29. Due to a bug during the HISinOne export of the e-mail addresses, at first only participants with "Teilnahme akzeptiert" were sent an e-mail, while participants with "Belegwunsch akzeptiert" were ignored at first. Luckily, the bug was fixed just in time (on January 26) such that eventually all participants received an e-mail with their personalized link. Participation was anonymous.

The evaluation was also announced to the participants of the course in Lecture 12, slide 5. Participation was also asked for as part of Exercise Sheet 12. 20 points were awarded, which would be used to replace the points of the worst exercise sheet (there were 13 exercise sheets overall, for each of which a maximum of 20 points could be achieved). This year, again 50% out of the maximum number of points from the exercise sheets (that is, 130 out of 260 points) were required to be admitted to the exam. Last year, everyone was admitted to the exam, regardless of the number of points achieved in the exercises. Participation in the evaluation was XX% this year (TODO: update when number of exam registrations is final) vs. 71% last year. In previous years, where also 50% of the points from the exercise sheets was required for exam admission, participation was also over 90%.

Die Dozentin ist sehr engagiert. Die Vorlesungen sind didaktisch hervorragend aufbereitet und sehr gut auf die Übungen abgestimmt. Die Übungen beinhalten sehr anwendungsbezogene und interessante Beispiele.

Die Dozentin konnte mich für einen Forschungsbereich begeistern, der mich zuvor nicht sonderlich interessiert hat.

Die Professorin ist sehr sehr sehr engagiert und antwortet auf die Fragen von Studenten im Forum auch Nachts am Wochenende! Das gilt auch für ihre Tutoren. Trotzdem bleibt die Atmosphäre in der Veranstaltung sehr locker.

Die beste Vorlesung, die ich an dieser, und anderen, Universitäten gehört habe.

Die einzige Veranstaltung in der Vorlesung und Übungen Inhaltlich gut aufeinander abgestimmt sind und durchdacht wirken.

Frau Professorin Bast schafft es Inhalte sehr gut zuvermitteln die dann in den Übungen gefestigt werden

I would like to nominate Prof. Bast because she put in so much effort into the class, she was highly motivated, and enthusiastic, and together with the help of others she managed to deliver amazing lectures, extremely useful recordings, exercise sheets which made sure that you wouldn't waste time on unimportant things, but you would actually learn a lot from them, and except for the knowledge you get for the exam, you also get a lot of experience which will be very useful in the future, and at the same time she (and Patrick Brosi) were always there at the forum, answering questions about the assignments at any time of the day, which was extremely nice, they indeed cared for us and us learning more!

Ich habe nie eine Dozentin/Dozenten erlebt, die eine Vorlesung so extrem motivierend gestalten kann. Die Vorlesung macht, unabhängig vom Inhalt, einfach Spaß anzuhören. Die Dozentin gibt sich viel Mühe, die Vorlesungsstruktur und den Übungsbetrieb sinnvoll zu gestalten.

In diese Vorlesung geht man einfach sehr gerne. Man lernt jedes Mal eine Menge dazu. Zudem werden die grauen Zellen immer wieder durch spezielle Fragestellungen, die nichts mit dem Unterrichtsstoff zu tun haben, zum Denken angeregt. Somit wird neben dem fachlichen Thema auch immer wieder die Allgemeinbildung voran gebracht. Die Aufzeichnungen sind aufwändig aufbereitet und das Forum wird sehr aktive verwendet. Dies hilft enorm wenn man bei den Übungsaufgaben wieder einmal festhängt. Man Sieht Prof. Bast an, dass es ihr viel Freude bringt zu lehren und sie steht voll hinter ihrem Vorlesungsmaterial. Dies führt zu einer großartigen Energie im Vorlesungssaal und man wird einfach mitgerissen egal wie kompliziert der Gegenstand der Vorlesung gerade ist.

Insgesamt sehr hochqualitative Lehre. Souveräne Vorstellung der Inhalte. Stimmiges Konzept während der Vorlesung. Gute Bereitstellung von Vorlesungsinhalten. Sehr gute Betreuung und Hilfestellung bei Fragen und Problemen. Sehr gute Abstimmung von Vorlesungsinhalt und dazugehörigem Übungsblatt.

It is my first semester in Freiburg, but this was by far the best Professor I had. The lectures were well planed, the exercise sheets very well designed, the support to exercises on the forum was always helpful, but overall, Professor Bast really knows how to transmit knowledge! (That is the main goal of a Professor!)

Just the fact that everything was done very professionally and well. Prof. Bast answered explained everything in an understandable manner (and so did Patrick Brosi in his lecture). She answered all the questions which came up. And the exercises were good.

One of the best lecturer I have met in my academic life. Can teach deep concepts in understandable manner. Exercise materials are also really helpful for understand the concepts by applying them in real world.

Prof. Bast is awesome and she got me motivated to learn more. I wish the other professors would be like her.

Prof. Bast presents the contents of her lecture in a way that aids understanding and keeps students engaged. Questions and uncertainties are always dealt with right away and in a most professional manner. Everything built around the lecture (recordings, exercises, topics beyond the scope of the lecture that are woven in, etc.) is also exremely well orchestrated. Best lecturer I've seen so far.

Prof. Bast schafft es immer wieder für verschiedene Facetten der Informatik zu begeistern und regt zum Nachdenken und -forschen an.

Prof. Dr. Bast was as good as many lecturers from very good universities. I know this fact by having some online courses from different universities mostly from U.S and also the practical approach of teaching was interesting and satisfying a lot.

Prof. Hannah Bast can explain so much material in a short time and everyone understands it.

Sehr bemüht um die hohe Qualität ihrer Vorlesung.

Sehr praktisches und aufwändiges Modul. Es sollten nicht alle Spezialvorlesungen so praktisch sein und so wenig Theorie dahinter erklärt werden, aber für ein praktische Spezialvorlesung sehr gut gemacht. Es sollten nicht alle Spezialvorlesungen soviel Zeit in Anspruch nehmen, aber ich habe eine Menge in der Vorlesung gelernt. Wegen dem großen Zeitaufwand, welcher mein einziger richtiger Kritikpunkt ist gibt es die Lehrpreisnominierung nur knapp.

Simply it's just one of the better lectures i've been to in course of my studies

Since the lecturer (plus assistant) seem to work hard to give useful exercise sheets. Also they spend their time in answering questions in the forum which is extraordinary I guess.

The best courses I ever took in this masters: 1. 3D Image Analysis (by Dr. Olaf Ronneberger) 2. This course! Reasons: Recordings! Well-structured courses Lecturers explain well.

Very deep understanding of the topics in the course. The live coding sessions can be stressful for the lecturer so I appreciate the effort she puts in. Overall a really well designed and applicable course.
